Small is beautiful - skiing in Mönichkirchen

The Schischaukel Mönichkirchen resort has become one of the most popular destinations for skiing day trips in eastern Austria.

The family-friendly resort in Lower Austria’s Neunkirchen district has a long tradition, but has now become one of the best places for skiing just a stone’s throw from Vienna, Graz and Hungary.

With 50 snow-cannons to ensure perfect conditions throughout winter, the resort has not had to use them much so far this season and has had a successful winter as eastern Austria has seen some of the country’s biggest snowfalls this season.

The Austrian Times found skiing in the Wechsel area’s smooth mountains was pure fun for young and old.

Around 500 car parking spots ensure no time is wasted before skiers can hit the slopes, while lift passes can be bought via credit card at the resort’s website - www.schischaukel.net – and picked up at machines upon arrival.

Another reason why Mönichkirchen, which has around of 12 kilometres of pistes, has made an international name for itself is its fair one-day lift pass prices – 28 Euros for adults; 25.50 Euros for people aged 60 and older and skiers aged between 16 and 19; 15 Euros for children under 15 – and the resort restaurant’s delicious offerings.

Several shops rent skis while the town’s skiing school offers courses for old and young.

Mönichkirchen –just a few kilometres from the A2 motorway’s Pinggau exit – can be reached by car from Vienna, Graz and the Hungarian city of Sopron within an hour.

Coach company Dr Richard offers a daily connection between Vienna and Mönichkirchen. See www.richard.at or call +43 1 331 00-355 for more information.

Go to www.schischaukel.net (German) or www.schischaukel.net/en (English) or call +43 26 49 / 209 06 for more information on skiing in Mönichkirchen.
