World Exhibition in Vienna

The rapid changes and development that Vienna went through in last third of the 19th Century are being documented at the Wien Museum until September in their World Exhibition show.

The original show looks at the World Exhibition of 1873, where giant buildings were erected on the site of the Prater, including the 800 meter-long industry hall and the 80 meter-high domed construction of the rotunda.

The show was the first World Exhibition to be hosted outside London and Paris and came at a time when the Austrian capital was going through fundamental changes in infrastructure, culture and lifestyle. From the new Ringstrasse to the phenomena of mass entertainment and new medicine and technology, today's exhibit considers some of things that changed the lives of the Viennese all those years ago.

In 1850 Vienna had 550,000 residents but by the 1870s, the population was over one million. The World Exhibition in Vienna was held at this time in celebration of the dynamic city but turnout was a bit of a disappointment with much lower visitors than expected. After the opening came the stock market crash, signalling that the "good years" were over.

The Metropolis Experiment – Vienna and the 1873 World Exhibition is on at Wien Museum until 28 September 2014
