British historian John Matthews
has told how a gravestone found in Croatia could mark the final resting place of
the real life King Arthur.
Scientists have removed the stone from a tomb
in Podstrana for carbon dating tests backed by Arthur expert Matthews, reports
Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List.
Matthews - a consultant on Clive Owen's
and Keira Knightley's hit movie King Arthur - believes the legendary king was
really a Roman general called Lucius Artorius Castus, who later ruled over part
of Croatia.
"My only worry is that if we prove this to be true, people in
England will accuse me of stealing their legend from them," said
Matthews.
"But there is no doubt that it would be great to make a proper
archaeological survey of the area to see what further proof we could find," he
added.
