Getting their goat

Animal rights campaigners have called for an end to goat sacrifices at temples in India - after 50,000 of the beasts were slaughtered in a week in one city alone.

Hundreds of thousands or Hindu worshipers visit shrines to the goddess of destruction, Kali, many offering live sacrifices to save themselves from bad luck.

Now government leaders in West Bengal, eastern India, are under pressure to ban the mass slaughter.

"There are so many sacrifices now that they have started to affect the country's agriculture. There are whole farms devoted to raising goats for slaughter rather than producing food," said one campaigner.
