Leg over

Canal workers repairing a towpath in Nanjing, eastern China, were astonished when a black binliner was hurled from the bridge above them - containing a human leg.

The grisly discovery was made after workers dredged the bag from the waterway and found a man's leg apparently amputated below the knee.

"It was terrifying. It was still early in the morning and this bag came over the bridge with a great splash. When we looked inside it, we didn't know what to think," said workman Ju Po, 27.

Police are now trying to discover if the leg is part of a dismembered body being disposed of by a killer or illegally dumped human waste from a hospital.

"We think it belongs to a man because of the size and the hair on it but beyond that there are very few clues," said a police spokesman.
