Horrified Spanish cops have recovered hundreds of frozen solid puppies after they smashed a puppy smuggling ring.
The animals were smuggled into Spain from puppy farms in Slovakia - often hidden in tiny compartments to avoid customs officials or using fake passports.
Most were separated from their mothers while still small so they could be sold as quickly as possible to the maximum profit -- and police believe the stress of being moved meant that many died in appalling circumstances before they could reach Spain.
The dead puppies were then thrown into the freezer and frozen solid so they could be sent back to Slovakia periodically where the Spanish puppy sellers demanded a refund or replacement puppies.
The bodies were found in freezers in the town of Caceras, in Spain, at the end of operation "Toys" where police spent six months tracking down illegal puppy selling operations.
The investigation started after locals complained of buying pedigree dogs that died shortly after they were handed over. Experts then found that the pedigree certificates were forged and many of the puppies were actually far too young to have been sold on.
Police also recovered 58 cages with 75 puppies that have been taken into care.
A police spokesman said: "It is a lucrative business -- the puppies arrived from Slovakia costing next to nothing and were then sold on for hundreds of euros each."
Most of the dogs were younger than three months and never older than six and had forged European passports.
