Feeling Blue

Simply switching on a pale blue light can help children learn, according to a study by scientists at the Dutch University of Twente.

A series of tests showed that children who learned while a pale blue light was burning had better results than those without - on average 8.7 per cent better than those in three other classes.

After a month of learning with the blue lights the concentration levels of the children were also on average 13.7 per cent better than those in the other three classes at the primary school in Dorf Wintelre in Noord-Brabant.

Class teacher Tamara Voorjans said: "We decided to swap the standard white light and choose from a pale blue light to help energy levels and concentration or yellow for peace and relaxation. Blue was the colour we most often chose."

Now all classes in the school are to be equipped with the interchanging light colour systems.

The leader of the study and education expert Peter Sleegers now plans further tests with colored lights and different intensities to test how it affects the behaviour and motivation of the children.
