Missing German Found in Brit Jail

A student who sparked a Europe-wide police search after he vanished while heading to a lecture in Germany has been found - in a British jail.

Dominic Mende, 26, was described as intelligent and from a good family - with no history of depression - so German police started a Europe wide search after he set off from home to a lecture in Leipzig on 14 August - and never arrived.

But the puzzle was quickly solved by British police after they found the missing student was locked up in a call in the UK.

Sociology student Dominic's mother Frauke said: "No mother wants to hear their son has been arrested by the police but in this case we were delighted. We had imagined all sorts of terrible things - but at least now we know he is alive and well, even if we don't know why he is there or what he did."

Police had stepped up the search after finding thousands of Euros had been taken out at cash machines in Neuruppin in Germany and in the Eurotunnel office in France.

"No one can believe that he just went to England with only a backpack - he did not even take a jacket," said mum Frauke.

British police would only confirm that the man had been arrested on 17 August for an incident unrelated to the missing person report and refused to give any more details.
