A drugs trafficking ring smuggling 38 kilos of cocaine worth nearly 8 million GBP inside hollowed out pineapples has been thwarted by customs officials in the Ukraine.
The five-man gang - arrested at docks in Illichivsk, Ukraine - are alleged to have sailed the haul into the country on a container ship from Costa Rica.
The arrests were carried out in a joint operation between customs officials and the country's state security service who had been tracking the gang for several months.
A spokesman for the customs service said: "We'd been tipped off that the gang were looking to smuggle a large quantity of drugs into the country and that we should be on the look out for suspicious fruit.
"The shipment was spotted after one of our officers noticed a sticky substance around one of the pineapples. It turned out to be glue used to seal the two halves of the pineapple," he said.
