Exit Poll

Swiss suicide organisation Exit say more than half of retirement and nursing homes help patients take their own lives.

A new poll on OAP home workers shows more than 50 per cent of those asked said their clinics had assisted in the suicides of residents.

Exit helps terminally or chronically ill patients to die in Switzerland, where assisted suicide is legal.

Vice president Bernhard Sutter said: "Five years ago, only 20 percent of institutions accepted it."

Marc Pirter, head of one home in Baden that offers the service, said they had adopted the policy when two residents had asked for assistance in death.

"It's not up to us to determine what is right or wrong, we believe that the will of the patients must remain our top priority. For them, their world shrinks to a bed and a chest of drawers."
