Prison warden jailed for smuggling

A prison warden will be spending time on the other side of the bars after being caught smuggling contraband in for inmates.

German Thomas Lutz, 37, has been jailed for four years after giving lags mobile phones and other banned items in exchange for cash. He raked in around £2,000 from the set-up.

Public Prosecutor Andreas Franck from Munich County Court said: "He alone managed to turn the prison system into a farce. Supplying mobile phones to prisoners enables them to have contact with the outside - to contact witnesses and accomplices. We are talking about dangerous criminals here incluging murderers and rapists."

Defence lawyer Andreas von Mariassy said: "Nothing happened as a result of him smuggling in the phones."
