Beaten And Hung But Police In India Say It Was An Accident

Indian police are under fire after they listed the beating and hanging of a teenage boy from the India's 'untouchable' caste as an accidental death because he dared to speak to a girl from an upper caste.

The police report concluded: "They had not meant to kill him. Just teach him a lesson. Vedict: Accidental death."

The taboo act was witnessed by the girl's brother Sachin Golekar, 21, who then led a mob that killed the 17-year-old boy in a beating and hanging in the village Kharda, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Deputy superintendent of police Dheeraj Patil agreed to act after a protest by the family and friends of the dead boy, Nitin Raju Aghe.

He said: "He had been seen talking to the girl in a field by some people, including the girl's brother. The group allegedly attacked Nitin with sticks and strangled him to death with a rope. They then hanged him from a tree."

He said the brother of the girl he spoke with had been arrested along with two others and would face charges.
