A man in Taiwan is suing a mum after he spent a 'small fortune' on her and her daughter for more than a decade as part of a deal that would let him marry the girl when she reached 17-years-old.
But after 10 years of showering the girl and her mother with gifts, paying for them to go on holidays and paying off their debts, he was furious when he turned up on the girl's 17th birthday to have the contract honoured, only to be told she had married somebody else.
He told the court: "I was stunned. Her mother had strung me along for years promising me that she would be mine when she was 17. I immediately knew that she was the perfect one for me when I first saw her even though she was very young. I am not a child abuser, I was happy to wait, and so I agreed a deal with her mother. In order to financially support them and help them out of the difficulties I would be able to marry her when she came of age."
The man said that he had watched the young girl suddenly become a young woman and had travelled to the family from his home in the capital Taipei after her 17th birthday expecting that she would be ready and waiting for him.
Instead he was confronted by the girl's mother, who told him: "You will never marry her. She has gone away and married another, and she is already pregnant with his child."
The man said he was 32 when he started financially supporting the mother and child and he is now 41 and felt betrayed and cheated, and was demanding the return of all the money that he had paid in the intervening years as well as compensation for the years he spent alone waiting for his bride-to-be to become available.
He said: "I did the decent thing, I'm not a paedophile, and now I'm left the loser. In total, I have spent approximately 900,000 Taiwanese dollars (17,647 GBP) on the girl and her mother."
The case has already been to court once where a judge threw out his claim. After hearing the evidence he said it was only a "verbal agreement" that went against the commonly agreed standards of public decency, and that there was no way such a deal could be backed up by a court of law. He added: "The entire concept including the promise of marriage was effectively null from the start."
But the aggrieved man said he will not give up, and is taking his claim to a higher court. "I am not done yet. I made an agreement and I expect people to stick by it. She should leave her husband and marry me as agreed," he said.
