Snake Chased Bus Driver Off Bus

Snake Chased Bus Driver Off Bus

A bus driver fled after spotting a 4 foot snake slithering towards him that he initially thought was an abandoned designer belt.

Driver Zdenek Svec, 38, had just finished his route in the Czech Republic capital Prague and was clearing up the bus when he spotted the red and black shape draped across the back of the seat.

He said: "I only glanced at it briefly and thought it was a leather belt at first. It was only when I went to put my hand towards it that I realised it was actually a snake. I still didn't twig at that point, I thought it was a model, then I suddenly saw its tongue move and I realised it was real. I snapped my hand back and ran off and the bloody thing came slithering after me up the central aisle. I thought they were supposed to be scared of people."

The quick thinking bus driver managed to get off the bus then shut the door behind him, trapping the snake inside. The reptile was eventually caught by police together with a snake handler who put it in a shelter.

Despite its poisonous looking colour it was identified by experts as a grey-banded kingsnake (Lampropeltis alterna), which is not poisonous.

Police spokesman Jan Cihak said: "We assume the snake escaped from somewhere, rather then being left on the bus deliberately. Nevertheless if we find the person they will be fined. Snakes do not belong on public transport. And especially not ones which are not properly secured."
