Legal Loophole Lets Germans Swap Driving Licence Points

A German man nicknamed the 'Points Pope' has been hailed a hero by hundreds of drivers in Germany for helping them save their driving licenses using a loophole in the law.

Accountant Rene Meier, 60, who was banned from driving for drink driving in 1988, set up a professional 'point swap market' in the Fatherland.

On his online platform, people who are facing points on their licenses are able to find someone who - for a payment - will accept their points for them, thus allowing them to keep their license.

Meier said: "I got the idea at the end of the 1990s when I got a new driving license in France. As it wasn't a German license I was always able to accept the points from friends.

"The business has grown, I now help up to 20 drivers a month. Many of them who come back time and again."

The service costs a 100 EUR (80 GBP) admin fee plus 100 Euros per point, and 300 Euros (245 GBP) per month for a driving ban. Meier takes half, the person accepting the points the other half.

Lawyer Uwe Lenhart, 45, said: "People using this system are using a loophole in the law. It is hard to prove and punish. But controls have been tightened."

Only in five percent of cases are photos of the driver caught and the person accepting the points compared.
