Couple Get A Real Train Set In The Garden After Rail Crash

Couple Get A Real Train Set In The Garden After Rail Crash

A family in Serbia had a lucky escape as they sat having lunch in their home, and witnessed two railway freight cars suddenly topple into their garden from the railway line at the back of their house.

The accident happened in the western town of Priboj when 62-year-old Milisav Rakic and his family were having their midday meal.

Rescue workers called to the scene said it was a miracle none of the family were hurt, but 11 goats, five pigs and 15 chickens they kept in the back yard were all killed by the falling freight wagons.

"I was shouting for the kids to run away as the train was flying," said Rakic. "It felt like an earthquake."

The train was heading from the capital Belgrade to the Montenegrin capital Podgorica.

During the derailment all 12 family members were in Rakic's house where they had been planning a family celebration.

Rakic said: "We were planning a happy event, a wedding, but it almost ended up as a mass funeral."

A probe into what caused the disaster is underway. Police said it was likely to take a week to clear away the mess and that the train traffic in the region will be disrupted for at least that time as the track is repaired and alternative routes sought for passengers.
