Police in Croatia have identified a man suspected of being the canine hitman who shot and killed several dogs in the country including Olly, who he shot and threw in a river.
Despite massive injuries Olly survived, and in the wake of media coverage police confirmed they were hunting and have now caught the killer who had thrown the pet in the Drava river in the north of the country.
The man, Dragutin Janicar, 67, from the northern town of Varazdin has confirmed that he shot Olly, but alleged the hound was a threat to wild game as he had been running free.
Janicar was caught after the fisherman that pulled Olly from the river saw the man's car nearby and noted the number.
"My son saw the dog," said fisherman Pawel Brodzky. "He was floating like a log past us and suddenly his front leg moved, as if he was waving at us. We pulled the poor creature from the water and took him to a local animal shelter, where he was said to be in poor shape but strong enough to survive."
Although caught as the shooter of Olly, Janicar denies he was the one who shot the other animals in the area.
He told the online edition of Croatian daily Jutarnji List that the shooting of Olly had been a legal execution carried out according to the rules.
"The dog was alone in a hunting zone. Such stray dogs do harm to hunting zones by chasing rabbits. Croatian hunting law allows us to kill a dog if he is alone 300 metres from inhabited zone," he said.
Local media said that several other dogs had been similarly executed in the area because their owners had wanted to get rid of them easily, and cheaply. Only Olly survived both a shotgun blast and a plunge into the icy river.
