Driver Slip Up Leaves Road Covered In Fish

Driver Slip Up Leaves Road Covered In Fish

To police it looked like a fishy case from the start: What else could it be when patrol men got to the scene of an accident in China and found two smashed up cars and a road blocked by 12,000 lbs of frozen fish.

The fish had spewed from a lorry that had got into a scrap with a BMW and a Toyota.

The BMW, driven by Hui Tsou, and the Toyota by Kuan-Yin Meng, were travelling at high speed on a highway in Haikou city in south China’s Hainan province when the second car slowed down because the driver noticed his passenger was not strapped in.

The BMW, travelling behind, could not stop in time and smashed into the back. "There was nothing I could do," said Tsou. "He braked so suddenly that I just rammed into him."

As the two cars began skidding over the highway a fish lorry tried desperately to miss them both. The trucker almost succeeded but he lost control and the truck overturned on to the unlucky BMW.

A female passenger in the BMW was slightly hurt but the main damage was to the trucker's wallet. He owned all the fish on board which instead of going to market were now destined for the dustbin.

"There were fish as far as the eye could see," said a police spokesman. "The place stank and it took a long while to clear up the mess."

The trucker, Wang Hu, 56, added: "I did my best to keep control and keep out of the way of the smashed cars but the load suddenly shifted as I was trying to pass the BMW.

"I fought with the wheel and then I had this terrible sensation of the whole contraption overturning. I knew I had lost it and just said a prayer and went with it. I lost a lot of money, but at least I am alive."
