Aardvark Twins Born In Russian Zoo

Aardvark Twins Born In Russian Zoo

Life will only get aarder the older they get - but for now these cute twins are enjoying their moment in the sun.

Crowds have been oohing and ahhing all week at Russia's Yekaterinburg Zoo after this rare birth of African aardvarks.

The aardvark is the only living species of the order Tubulidentata and as its name suggests, it resembles a pig with a long snout, which is used to sniff out food.

Aardvarks give birth to one offspring every two years, so the birth of twins is not only a first for Russia, but also a unique and rare event for animal parks around the world.

During their morning rounds, officials of the zoo in the city Yekaterinburg in central Russia discovered that their female aardvark, Bagu, had given birth to a baby, which weighted 1.560 kg, late last month. Hours later a second one arrived, with weight of 1.750kg - some 190g heavier.

Bagu gave birth to her first baby in February 2013 and it was the first recorded birth of an aardvark in the country.

The sex of the two new offsprings is not known yet, but both of them are now weighing in around 4kg. The first pictures of the babies, who have been feeding on their mother’s milk and are becoming more and more active every day, have been made public.

The officials say that the mother is given a mixture of cereals and dry food with cooked apples, mealworms and bananas, as well as vitamins during the pregnancy and lactating period.
