Lan Aihong has carried her motherly burden all her life without complaining.
"It is what a mother does, care for her child," said the woman from a remote village in Tonggu county in East China's Jiangxi province.
But now her 13-year-old daughter Feng Huan has a glimmer of hope for the future after locals rallied around to pay for treatment to remove the egg-sized tumour on her spine that was crippling her.
"No-one has anything here but over the years they scrimped and saved to send Feng to a doctor," cried 37-year-old Aihong, who still struggles to piggy-back her daughter around.
"In the end surgeons were able to operate on her and remove the tumour. Now there is a glimmer of hope that she may be able to walk again in the near future after corrective surgery on her legs.
"The tumour brought nothing but pain to my daughter all of her life. She has only been able to crawl or stagger a few yards. She even needs help to go to the toilet. My husband and I feared she would be like this forever."
Dirt poor themselves, they had no idea of the generosity of spirit of her neighbours until they came to them one day with a pot of money. "Please take this and make Feng better," they said.
The parents took the child off to a clinic in Shenzhou, a city in South China's Guangdong province, specialising in the treatment of tumours.
"She is able to stand for longer periods now and we hope within months she may actually be able to start walking," said her mother. "It is not a miracle, it is due to the kindness of others."
