Puppys Ears Cut Off With Scissors So He Can Fight Better

Puppys Ears Cut Off With Scissors So He Can Fight Better

Rayo the mongrel is a gentle soul but cruel dog fighters wanted to turn him into a killing machine.

In a bid to turn him from pet to killer they cut off his ears believing it would make him more aggressive and also less likely to suffer pain in a fight - with no ears there is less for his rival to get hold of.

Rayo - it means lightning - was found wandering in the eastern Spanish city of Mataro when he was rescued by a local animal welfare group.

A half-breed pit bull aged only four months, Rayo was suffering an infection from the DIY amputation which was carried out with a pair of scissors.

Police have been trying to track down a dog fighting ring in the city for several months and are convinced Rayo's mutilators are the kingpins in it.

"The dog was suffering a great deal when he was brought to me," said Marcelo Cabrera, vet at the local animal shelter. "This was not a procedure carried out by a vet. The dog's ears were simply cut off while it was fully conscious. The pain would have been enormous, and then the wounds became infected which is why it was abandoned.

"It is a terrible thing to inflict on a puppy. I am baffled and saddened by the ability of man to inflict such pain and distress on one of our fellow creatures.

"The good news is that Rayo is responding well to antibiotics and is out of danger. But he will suffer a lot of pain in that area because it is an extremely delicate part of its body."

According to Spanish laws, this kind of cruelty could land the perpetrators in jail for up to a year with a fine of up to 16,000 GBP.

His rescuers launched a campaign on Facebook to look for a family for Rayo once he is well. Several people volunteered and he will be adopted by one of them when he is fully recovered.

The dog's owner is being hunted by police for a crime against animal rights.
