Zombies Invade Spanish Town

Zombies Invade Spanish Town

These zombies invaded a Spanish town at the weekend.

Described as more fun than football, 2,000 people participated in the role-playing game about the undead in Archena in south-eastern Spain.

Competitors had to avoid being infected by a group of zombies that arrived to the area carrying a dangerous virus. Only 18 survivors got away from the grip of the zombies to be declared winners.

The zombie weekend coincided with a festival of fantasy films being held in the region.

Contestants had to run all night through the streets of the village to avoid being infected. Aurelio Torres Solano, one of the players, said: "It beats bullfighting and football hands down. People were laughing the whole night long, but there was a grim determination to stay alive and not be turned into a zombie like the invaders.

"The costumes were amazing. People just went to amazing lengths to look like the undead from a war zone. It was fantastic."

The winners were rewarded with one free hour of jet skiing.

Zombie festivals have become trendy throughout Europe in recent years, usually revolving around horror film festivals. The rise of zombie-themed parties can be traced back to the 2004 low budget British film Shaun of the Dead, in which a man takes on hordes of flesh-eating zombies that have invaded his city, armed with just a cricket bat.
