Farm Land Used To Grow Rubbish Mountains

Farm Land Used To Grow Rubbish Mountains

According to a Chinese council, this is a photograph of prime farming land.

But now angry locals in Gong Village in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are demanding that the local council admit that their claims submitted to central government for subsidies are based on a lie – and in fact the whole region is one big garbage tip.

The problem started according to locals when fly tippers were allowed to act unchecked. When people realised that the area could be used as a garbage tip, they were turning up with truckloads that were being dumped without any punishment.

There are now reportedly tens of thousands of tons of garbage piled illegally up to hills in the so-called farming land.

But now after the local media started writing about the rubbish, which gives off such a pungent aroma and is so infested with flies that locals complain of headaches and disease spread by the insects, the local council has decided to act and promised to move all the rubbish to a new location within six months.

Locals however remain sceptical. Villager De Pai, 56, said: "It’s too disgusting to come close to it. We have no idea why the local government pays no attention to it at all. It is hard to understand why the government allows people to discard garbage there that then forms such a huge garbage hill."

The breakthrough came when local council officials finally decided to visit the village and admitted they were shocked by what they had seen.

After six council officials sat at the centre of the village and smelled for themselves the disgusting aroma and listened to the complaints, they have promised now to build a proper rubbish tip in the region and to remove the tens of thousands of illegally dumped rubbish within half a year.

Villagers remain sceptical but admit that at least now the council has acknowledged there is a problem.
