A tragic Chinese man cut off his own feet because he did not have money for surgery and was in incredible pain.
The man, Liu Dunhe, 44, suffered from an ailment that cut off blood circulation to his feet, causing permanent infections and making it impossible for him to walk more than a few yards before collapsing in agony.
A resident of Yanqiao township in Dingyuan county, his parents died 20 years ago and his ailment, coupled with a speech impediment, have left him dirt poor and living on the handouts of neighbours.
According to Meng Hueng, a neighbour, his feet became "black and smelly" and the pain was driving him insane. Two months ago, unable to qualify for any state aid for surgery, he smashed teacups and used the jagged edges of the porcelain to sever his own feet.
"The pain must have been astonishing," said Hueng. "But perhaps it was less than the agony caused by the ailment. In any event he managed to chop off both his feet and I found him in a pool of blood the next morning. He was lucky that he had not bled to death."
Locals rallied around to raise money for some emergency care and he was transported to a local clinic for emergency surgery. He hopes to have prosthetic feet attached later in the year.
Struggling to speak he told local media: "If it works it will be great, but for now I am glad I have food and no more pain."
