Hungry Panda Rescued From Muddy Ditch

Hungry Panda Rescued From Muddy Ditch

It's panda-monium in the wild for this giant bear who had to be rescued and taken into care after tumbling into a ditch where it was unable to get free.

Hungry and exhausted, this rare giant panda is now being nursed back to health after his mishap near Yimudi township in southwest China’s Sichuan province

Rescuer Cong Ho, 46, said: "He was covered in mud, tired, hungry, wet and cold when we found him on the afternoon of May 7. A villager saw him struggling to try to get out of the bottom of an irrigation ditch.

"He probably went nosing around in it for food and found he couldn't claw his way back up the embankment. He seemed very weak and rolled around the pit looking forlorn and quite dirty." The villager said he called officials immediately.

Nature protection area staff came to the scene. When they checked the panda and found it was uninjured, they sent it to nearby Da Fengding National Nature Protection Area.

"The place where it was found doesn’t have enough bamboo for it, so we had to bring it to the nature protection area where there is plenty of bamboo - its staple food," said one staff member.

The panda, nicknamed Grubby by staff who cleaned him up, will spend a week recuperating before being released back into the wild.
