Skeleton Crew Stage Protest Over Forced Closure Of Restaurant Ship

Skeleton Crew Stage Protest Over Forced Closure Of Restaurant Ship

This is a real skeleton crew at work.

The boney employees are actually the main props in a protest against red tape in Germany that shut down a restaurant ship.

Managers put the skeletons around the floating eatery called the MS Allegra while they go through the tedious and time consuming process of applying for the new paperwork that will allow them to open the gangway once more to paying customers.

The ship which is located in a harbour in the western city of Dusseldorf has been serving food for years, but it was forced to shut weeks ago when inspectors complained it still did not have a proper catering certificate.

Council officials say that five years ago the boss of the Allegra was told they needed the catering license and say they have been "more than lenient" in allowing the restaurant to operate without one. But now they have enforced the law.

The owner of the ship, Simone Kueffner, said: "MS Allegra has been a restaurant for three decades. In February the regulatory agency closed the ship. We must now make applications for a catering trade licence. It is a bummer because it is an enormous bureaucracy and will take ages. The staff have had to be laid off and I am not making any money.

"The service personal placed the skeletons on board to make their protest. But for the bureaucracy in Germany you have to wait patiently a long, long time."
