Biking Legend Accused Of Drink Driving Accident

Biking Legend Accused Of Drink Driving Accident

Disgraced German cycling Tour de France legend Jan Ullrich is accused of causing a car accident whilst under the influence of alcohol, leaving two people in hospital.

Police said Ullrich, 40, crashed his Audi with 1.4 per mil of alcohol in his blood when the accident occurred in the area of Mattwil in the Swiss region of Thurgau.

According to police the Audi A6 driven by Ullrich smashed into the back of a Citroen C3 which was stopped at a stop sign at a junction.

The impact caused the Citroen to overturn, the Audi then also hit an Alfa Romeo before coming to a standstill in a field.

Ullrich later spoke to Swiss daily Blick and said: "I am very sorry. Thankfully nobody was killed. I was running late, I was stressed after an appointment and wanted to get home as quick as possible."

Whilst Ullrich admits he was driving too fast he denies that he had been drinking. He said: "I had not had any alcohol."

But police say a breath test found he was over the limit. They have now also taken blood and urine tests.

All three cars were a write off.

It is not the first time Ullrich has caused an accident by drink driving. Back in 2002 Ullrich crashed into a row of bicycles in the centre of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau, in Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany, and fled. He was also caught a short while later and found to have 1.41 per mil of alcohol in his blood.

Ullrich is no stranger to scandal. In 2006, he was was barred from the Tour de France amid speculation of having taken performance enhancing drugs. In February 2012, Ullrich was found guilty of a doping offence by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He was retroactively banned from 22 August 2011, and all results gained since May 2005 were removed from his Palmares. He initially had denied he had cheated to win until finally admitting to blood doping in 2013.
