A taxi driver in Russia lost his leg in an horrific accident where a tram jumped the rails and amputated his limb in a split second.
Gregorii Alamahov, 54, was standing by his cab with his back to the oncoming tram in Vladivostok in eastern Russia as he took a break from driving and was enjoying a cigarette.
Tram no. 6 was hurtling towards the stop when it suddenly jumped the tracks. Video footage of the incident and the stricken driver can be seen lying on the ground, his left leg severed with blood pouring out and him screaming: "Why is this happening to me, God?! Call the ambulance!"
Fireman Vassily Kopicek, who by chance was waiting in line at the tram stop, said: "The trams are old around here and the rails bent and often misshapen. I think that a combination of poor maintenance and high speed caused it to leap off the rails.
"It was over in the blink of an eye. I rushed over to the poor guy on the ground but there was nothing anyone could do apart from stem the bleeding. One man took off his belt to wrap around his stump as a tourniquet. A woman kept brushing the victim's forehead as he started to shiver and go into shock.
"The tram driver ran over too, and was also treated at the scene for shock. It's not like a car, you can't steer it out of the way once it left the rails."
Emergency medics took the injured man away. At the hospital surgeons had to operate to remove what was left of his leg. He is in a serious but stable condition and is expected to survive the disaster.
A local police spokesman said: "This was a terrible accident and a full enquiry is under way. Speed and maintenance issues are being examined."
