A dying boy has been granted his last wish - to be held in the arms of his mother one last time.
Cancer victim Cao Zongchao, 11, has only days to live, and told doctors and nurses at the hospital where he is being treated in China that he wanted to see his mother.
She had left his father years before and married another man and they had become estranged. "Please ask my mum to hug me one more time," he told nurses.
Incredibly his mum, Qian Baofeng, 39, initially refused saying that her time with the boy's husband had been a nightmare, and although she loved her son she had no desire to relive the ordeal by being reminded of her previous life.
But later she relented, and travelled from the remote region where she lives to be with him at his bedside at a hospital in north China’s Tianjin municipality.
"I am with you now, my darling," she told him as she took his frail body in his arms. "I will look after you."
While the boy was comforted by his mother's touch, the reality is that he will be dead very soon. He is suffering with a rare form of kidney cancer and is in the late stages of the disease.
He has lost nearly 60lbs in weight and is very weak. He used to be a top pupil at his school and his father, Cao Qizhen, 45, said: "We were so proud of him. But now there is no future."
The boy used to live with his parents in the city of Sanya in south China’s Hainan province, where they farmed the land. Life was tough but all were happy, until 2011, when the boy’s parents divorced. Cao then returned to his hometown in the rural area in the city of Tianjin in east China’s Shandong province with his father while his mother stayed in Sanya.
A hospital doctor said: "The mother hates the father, not the boy, but it meant she was reluctant to come and see him. Eventually she was persuaded to and it was a very emotional time.
"She has been given a room to stay in at the hospital and will be here until the end."
The mother added: "I think that although there is no love lost between my ex husband and I, that was in part an excuse for me not to have to see my son dying. It is heartbreaking. I can only hope to make his passage into death easier."
