A sudden urge for ice cream may be an indication of cancer, according to a new book by Japanese doctor Munetetsu Tei called 'Diets Cancer Hates'.
In it he explains why a sudden change in appetite might be a sign of something more serious going on inside the human body, saying: "When I was working on the oncology ward one thing that struck me was the comment by a patient who developed a craving for ice cream and told me it was the cancer that was calling the shots.
"It was said in jest, but then I noticed that several other cancer patients seem to have a craving for ice cream that on questioning they had not had previously. One person had even said they positively disliked ice cream previously."
He added that he believed the reason was indeed the cancer, saying: "While some foods are broken down into energy providing sugars during digestion, junk foods like ice cream provide the glucose that cancer cells require to spread faster."
"Cooling the body also decreases its immune system functions and causes the cancer to spread. Cancer thrives on a diet that’s cold and sweet. Eating foods like ice cream or chilled sugary drinks is like feeding cancer in certain patients."
Dr Tei is currently the president of Nihon Pharmaceutical University, an institution which combines modern medicine with holistic treatments. As such many of his claims are more theoretical and based on experience rather than rigorously tested and evaluated through clinical study.
Although it sounds like science fiction, Tei says that it is already an accepted phenomena that the body can dictate its nutritional requirements. He gave the example of pregnant women who often find themselves wanting completely different foodstuffs to what they would normally enjoy as a result of changes in the body caused by being pregnant.
