Fears are growing for the life of a 10-year-old girl who was abducted and gang-raped by three men in India last year who has now been abducted again, and her family fear this time she may not survive.
This latest atrocity against females in the country happened at the weekend. The girl was allegedly kidnapped in Meerut, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, by a relative of one of her rapists who is serving time in jail.
The incident has sent the local police into a frenzy as they are being blamed for not taking the matter seriously in the first place. They conducted raids throughout the night on Sunday and Monday but were not able to find the girl.
The incident comes after Indians were shocked over the deaths of two teenage girls who were raped and murdered before their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in northern India.
Three brothers today confessed to attacking and killing the young cousins, named Murti and Pushpa, in a case which outraged the nation and the wider world.
The crime in particular provoked outrage after it emerged that police in the village of Katra initially refused to investigate the girls' murder due to their low-caste status.
And in the latest incident involving the 10-year-old girl, her family is alleging that the police did not pay heed to their demands for protection for the girl because of their status.
They claimed that last month that an attempt was made on her life when a speeding car tried to mow her down. She escaped with a fractured leg.
