Panda Squad Hope To Take Crown Of Paul The Octopus

Panda Squad Hope To Take Crown Of Paul The Octopus

China has put forward a squad of panda cubs as the successor to Paul the German octopus who correctly predicted the outcome of eight football games, including the championship match at the 2010 World Cup.

The baby pandas all aged between one and two are being asked to predict the results in the upcoming World Cup in Brazil with a host of activities. For the group matches, the pandas will be let loose on three bamboo baskets containing food to predict a win, a loss or a draw.

In the knockout rounds, the pandas will be asked to climb trees marked with different national flags on the trunks. They will also be given different vests to wear as they take part in races to predict the winning nations.

The selection process will be carried out at the panda breeding base in China's Sichuan province.

The Chinese attempt is the latest to find a successor to Paul, who died in October 2010. In the 2012 European Championships, India used an elephant named Citta to predict winners. But when most of her guesses were completely wrong, she was quickly dismissed as an animal guru with the status of the octopus.

Panda keeper Chan Tien, 35, said: "We are not disappointed by the fact that the Indian elephant turned out to be a bit of a disaster, after all, India was taking part in the 2010 and 2012 World Cups and therefore was biased. However, China has no team in the World Cup and therefore our pandas will be far more objective."
