English Fans Expecting Easy Win Over Old Fat Men In Brazil Get A Surprise

English Fans Expecting Easy Win Over Old Fat Men In Brazil Get A Surprise

A group of English football fans picked the wrong guys to challenge to a six-a-side kickabout in Brazil - when they discovered they were former national players for Croatia.

According to Croatian media who spoke to the Croat players the Brits had seen the older men, who had put on a few pounds since their professional days, and thought it would be a great way to get a few free beers with a challenge.

The Croats accepted the challenge on world famous Copacabana Beach in the city of Rio de Janeiro - and thrashed the unsuspecting Englishmen 3-0.

The Croatian side included Petar Krpan who played for the national squad at the World Cup 1998 in France when Croatia came third. Former German Bundesliga player Marko Babic, who was with Croatia at World Cups in 2002 and 2006, was also there.

Both men have put on weight in the intervening years, but are still nimble on their feet.

Petar said: "They thought we looked old and fat, but we showed them a thing or two."

Peter Chester from Liverpool, who saw the match, said: "The Brits were much younger than the other side and fancied themselves for an easy victory. They bet several rounds of beers that they would thrash them.

"Of course, you can't field a team with former world class players and expect the odds to be even. They rang rings around the British and put the ball into the net with ease.

"Afterwards they revealed their identities and everyone ended up having a good laugh. The British had to buy the beers but consoled themselves with souvenir photos taken with the guys who thrashed them."
