Boy Crucified On Balcony To Punish Him

Boy Crucified On Balcony To Punish Him

Police in Mexico are probing a case of horrific child abuse in which a young boy was tied to the iron railings of a balcony.

Horrified neighbours of the child took photos of him and shared them on social networking sites, prompting police to raid the family home.

The plight of the boy is just the latest in a series of child abuse scandals that has rocked Mexico.

The boy was rescued from his home in the town of Xalapa, in the southeast Mexican province of Veracruz. One of the neighbours, Mariza Guerrero, 55, took the pictures and when interviewed later after they went viral, told local media: "It was a very creepy situation because it was horrible to see a little boy tied hands and foot with scarves to the window of the house".

According to the neighbours, the boy’s mother roped him up with the consent of the father who had watched. Mrs. Guerrero said the family has four children aged 13, 10, four and two years old.

Police are probing whether or not there was any ritual aspect to the tying up of the boy because the family are known to be strict Christians.

The head of Social Communication in Veracruz, Alberto Silva Ramos, shared the photos on his Twitter profile and said: "The authorities are investigating this horrible act in order to punish the guilty parties. Such things must not be allowed to occur in modern-day Mexico."

Mexican authorities have refused to release the name of the family to respect the boy's privacy.

In May a grandmother tied her grandson with adhesive tape and shared his pictures on social networks because the boy was "irritating" her. The woman, named Olga Lidia Zavala Arias, was arrested.
