Kids Wade Through Flood Swollen Rivers To Get To School

Kids Wade Through Flood Swollen Rivers To Get To School

When it comes to getting to school these Chinese kids and their parents cannot be accused of not putting in the effort after they were snapped trying to wade across a swollen river in order to get to classes on time.

Despite heavy rains it seems that students in Naha Primary School in Funing County in China's Sichuan Province would not dream of letting anything as minor as a flash-flood put them off attending school for the all-important education they need to succeed in modern China.

These pupils were snapped battling through the flood waters because there is no bridge, and the local officials have ruled that the floods don't come often enough to justify the cost of building one when people can still wade across most of the time even if it means getting their feet wet.

Local water authority official Hui T'ao said: "There is not enough money to build a bridge yet but we hope to in the near future. It is not ideal for children to have to go through this twice a day but there is no alternative at present."

And in the meanwhile the snaps of the kids getting soaked and putting their lives at risk as they battle to get to school is further indication as to why China is doing so well on international education scales.

Youngster Jie Hsing, 7, said: "It's pretty cold but me and most of my friends wear sandals and short trousers and with the long walk afterwards things are usually mostly dry by the time we get to school. It's great when there is a teacher or an adult around to carry us over the water but that isn't always the case and then we just have to get feet wet."

China is included in international education tests held every three years by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, measure pupils' skills in reading, numeracy and science.

These Pisa tests - the Programme for International Student Assessment - have become the leading international benchmark and show China has an education system that is overtaking most Western countries.

The Pisa 2009 tests even showed that Shanghai was top of the international education rankings.
