Overloaded Chinese Lift Plunges To The Ground

Overloaded Chinese Lift Plunges To The Ground

A group of Chinese people paid for ignoring the weight limits on a lift and packing themselves in like sardines when it broke and crashed to the floor – leaving them trapped in the wreckage.

The incident happened at a lift taking people to a supermarket in the city of Anqing in central China’s Anhui province.

One of the 10 people trapped inside, Shing Shao, 35, told local TV after he entered people kept shoving themselves inside until there was not any room, and then the doors had shut.

He said: "It was actually mostly supermarket staff that were getting inside, and all of them had boxes of products that they were taking to the shop floor. It seemed to me like the lift was overloaded but I thought as they work here, they probably know what they're doing.

"When the door shut there was a whining sound as if something was straining and we felt the lift going faster than one would expect. It hit the ground with an enormous thump that sent everybody falling to the floor. People were screaming but the was no way to get out as the doors wouldn't open."

According to rescue workers, emergency brakes and a special safety pad underneath the lift had prevented anybody suffering from serious damage but those inside were trapped for over an hour and the pressure of the people crowded into the tiny space had meant that one of the women fell unconscious and had ended up in intensive care where she is still in a coma.

The others were freed without injury and the supermarket management said it was considering sanctions against staff who had packed too much into the lift causing the accident.
