Russian police are investigating a bizarre case after locals complained that a truck with a dead body lying on the back had been parked in the town of Kumertau in the Republic of Bashkortostan in south-western Russia.
And the mystery deepened when police inspecting the van looked in the back to find no dead body, and instead discovered it was loaded with foodstuffs including fruit and veg for a local grocery shop.
Samuel Avdeyev, 43, was one of those who spotted the body and took this snap of it on his mobile phone, which he gave to police officers.
He said: "I had the impression it probably wasn't a crime because I can't imagine why somebody would leave a truck open with a dead body lying there if they had carried out some sort of crime. I was really surprised though when it was stopped a few hours later and the body was gone, and the same truck was being used to move foodstuffs. I mean it can't really be healthy to have fruit and vegetables in a truck with been a rotting corpse a short while earlier."
Police spokesman Elisha Biryukov said: "We cannot comment on this because it's a live investigation but we are interviewing the truck owner to find out what the body was doing in the back and where it went, and a report has also been sent to the local council department responsible for providing licences for transportation."
