A poor family in Romania has been struck by tragedy after a one-year-old girl died when she fell into an outhouse toilet and suffocated.
Mariuce Vasilescu was due to celebrate her second birthday next month when the accident happened. Her mother Maria said she had only left her daughter alone for a few minutes when she went into the kitchen to get them both a glass of water.
She told local media she had heard a cry, and when she rushed outside she could not see her daughter. But she had then realised that she had climbed up onto the toilet seat and fallen through the hole into the cesspit below.
It was only with the help of neighbours they finally managed to rescue the critically ill child from the three metre deep cesspit and she died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
Neighbours in the village of Ciobanu in Romania's Constanta county said that the parents were hard-working couple who doted on their only daughter, and had worked hard to give her everything they could.
A police spokesman said: "We have started a routine investigation but it seems as if this was simply a tragic accident that was unavoidable."
Wooden outhouses leading into a cesspit are common in many parts of rural Romania where access to the public sewerage network is often still not possible in many areas as is not extended throughout the country.
