Italian Deputy Mayor Undergoes Sex Change

Italian Deputy Mayor Undergoes Sex Change

A city deputy mayoress has stunned voters in Italy by telling them she is about to become their new deputy mayor - thanks to a sex change.

Chiara Romanini, 30, has announced to Town Hall colleagues in the city of Viareggio that she is about to undergo gender reassignment surgery to become Gianmarco.

Romanini - due to begin surgery in September - told local media: "I've been saving since I was 14 to get the money to pay for this surgery.

"I've worked every hour possible at every job you can imagine to reach my goal.

"As well as working for the city, I've also been a barmaid to get some extra cash."

"When I'm ready I want to become a father. I just want to correct the mistake nature made when she put me together," she added.

Romanini, who wears a man's suit to work, was elected to office as a Democratic Party candidate, but does not expect a voter backlash because of the sex change.

Although born a female she said she had known since she was a child that she was a man in the wrong body, and had always dressed as a man despite physically being a woman.

"I've never made a secret of my ambitions so I don't think too many people will be offended, or at least not anyone that matters.

"For the most part, people have been very supportive," she said.
