A lucky Russian motorist had an incredible escape after a mortar shell hit the highway in front of him and exploded into the air seconds before his car smashed into the debris.
Video footage captured on board the dashboard camera of Vladimir Prach's car shows debris from the road shooting into the air after the mortar shell slams into the concrete outside the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.
The video was shared on Russian social media website VKontakte where it quickly went viral showing how although the car escaped being hit by the live mortar shell, it was still destroyed by the subsequent debris.
Prach, a local resident of pro-Russian separatist controlled city of Donetsk whose nickname is Bova, said: "I climbed out of the car and saw that it had been wrecked but somehow it didn't seem important. When you see a live shell blow up in front of you and realise how close that was to killing you, somehow it's just good to be alive. I posted the video online and called it my second birthday."
Photos also posted by Prach show the extent of the damage done to his car during the collision with the mortar, believed to have been fired by Ukrainian forces.
Donetsk has seen the bulk of the fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists in the region. And the video shows despite the fact that people are trying to live their lives, they additionally face the everyday hazards of living in a war zone.
