Grinning Cop Takes Selfie As Suicide Victim Jumps

Grinning Cop Takes Selfie As Suicide Victim Jumps

A cop caught taking a selfie on his mobile phone as a man prepared to jump to his death from a bridge has been carpeted by senior officers in Turkey.

The beaming selfie obsessed cop can be seen posing carefully for the snapshot to make sure the clearly anguished victim was in the background clinging to the bridge over the Bosphorus in the capital Istanbul.

Seconds later, the man leapt nearly 600ft to his death - ignoring attempts by other officers to talk him down.

A picture of the cop's heartless selfie has provoked fury among the public in Turkey, where the officer is now facing an investigation.

Emergency services say the man survived the fall into the river, but died soon afterwards.

Police later named the victim as Sadrettin Saskın, 35, who is said to have had money problems.

"It was his third suicide attempt. Highly trained negotiators were trying to talk him into coming back onto the bridge when he suddenly let go and fell," said police spokesman Maksud Calik.

But critics say the sight of a uniformed officer in high-visibility gear talking selfies with him as the background could have pushed him over the edge.

"It was at best insensitive and at worst criminally negligent. This officer deserves to be pushed off the bridge himself," said one social media commentator.

But police spokesman Calik said: "A full investigation into the officer's conduct is ongoing. Any breach of duty identified will be disciplined."
