Two undercover journalists from the Sunday Times insight team that helped expose corruption between lobbyists and MEPs are to appear in court in Austria.
The former European Parliament member Ernst Strasser filed the case due to be heard today (Mon) in connection with the 2011 cash for influence scandal.
Strasser has accused the Upper Austrian News (OÖN) newspaper of slander.
Strasser was described by editor of the publication, Gerald Mandl Bauer, as having such traits as "greed", "selfishness" and "slipperiness" in an editorial published last March following the cash for influence scandal.
On 20 March 2011 the Sunday Times reported that three MEPs had accepted bribes in exchange for proposing changes to the European parliament. Ernst Strasser, who had previously held the position of Minister for the Interior in Austria and been part of the Austrian People’s Party, was amongst those accused.
Strasser continually denied the allegations throughout the course of the scandal and the report from OÖN is now the topic of today’s court case. "The allegation is that the articles from the newspaper have a defamatory content and that the content is untrue. In addition the journalistic integrity and presumption of innocence have also been violated," reported the spokesperson for the court in Linz, Rainer Nimmervoll.
In addition to Strasser, his successor in the European parliament, Othmar Karas and the charged former ÖVP chairman Josef Pröll have also been called as witnesses. The court said the two English journalists who posed as lobbyists and secretly filmed Strasser will also appear. According to Nimmervoll, a verdict is not expected to be reached on the first day of the hearing.
The original case surrounding Ernst Strasser who was charged with corruption and money laundering still continues. According to the anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office the court still awaits the final report from the criminal investigations department.
