New Year's Concert ballets at Museum of Art History

By William Green

The two ballets for the coming New Year’s Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic will be danced for the first time at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History, KHM), it was announced today (Weds).

The Vienna State Opera Ballet and two "international guest artists" will dance the ballets to Johann Strauß’s polka "Ein Herz, ein Sinn" and waltz "Morgenblätterwalzer". They will be choreographed by former State Opera Ballet choreographer Renato Zanella.

The plan is to have the dancers perform in KHM’s entrance foyer, main staircase and cupola hall.

Scenes for the ballet, which are traditionally filmed at Austrian sites, will be shot ahead of the event and then screened during the concert, which is broadcast live across the world on the morning of 1 January every year.

Italian fashion star Valentino will be in charge of costumes for the ballet at the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert.

Giancarlo Giammetti, personal assistant to the 77-year-old Italian - who officially retired from the fashion industry last year – has said Valentino will design 18 dresses for the ballet dancers, including Italian star Eleonora Abbagnato.

A recording of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert of 1 January 2009 went platinum on its first day on sale. The orchestra, regarded as one of the best in the world, announced it would give 100,000 Euros from sales to Austrian charities.

KHM will open at 2pm on 1 January.

The New Year’s Concert to be directed by Georges Petre will be televised by ORF 2 beginning at 11:15am on 1 January.
