Newspaper avoids court case over unpaid bills

Austria’s motorway authority has stopped legal action against a tabloid after it paid part of an outstanding bill for motorway toll stickers.

A spokesman for the Asfinag, Austria’s motorway authority, said today (Fri) that daily Österreich had transferred a part of around 1.5 million Euros due after the paper offered free 2010 road-toll stickers – which regularly cost 76,20 Euros apiece – to readers signing up for an annual subscription.

The spokesman added the agency halted legal action after "Österreich guaranteed to pay the outstanding amount including interest by the end of this year."

Österreich executive Wolfgang Zekert said: "Österreich and Asfinag have returned to regular cooperation."

Rival papers had speculated Österreich was in financial trouble when it emerged earlier this year they owed Asfinag money.

Founded in 2006, Österreich has become Austria’s third bestselling daily. It has been classed as a free-sheet in Vienna where it can be picked up from dispenser boxes at public transport stations and other busy public places.
