VIA's passenger numbers still falling

Vienna International Airport (VIA) continued to lose passengers last month, new figures show.

VIA said today (Thurs) the fall in passenger numbers was 2.9 per cent year on year in October at 1.64 million.

The decline year on year was 6.6 per cent in September.

The number of October passengers heading to Eastern European destinations fell by 12.3 per cent but passenger numbers travelling to the Middle East and Western Europe rose by 12.8 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively.

The number of take-offs and landings in October dropped 8.2 per cent, and the number of transfer passengers was down by 2.1 per cent.

The number of passengers at VIA during the first 10 months of 2009 declined by 9.6 per cent year on year to 15.37 million, and maximum take-off weight was down by 8.3 per cent.

VIA said it expected a decline of nine per cent in passenger numbers in 2009.

Meanwhile an audit into the airport�s controversial new Skylink terminal is continuing.

The Audit Office (RH) is running a check after Skylink�s costs, originally estimated to be 400 million Euros, sky-rocketed to a reported 830 million Euros. Some media have speculated the final cost may exceed one billion Euros.
