Vienna is Romanians' favourite Austrian holiday destination

Vienna is set to remain Romanians’ favourite Austrian tourism destination, officials have said.

The Austrian Tourism Bureau in Bucharest announced yesterday (Thurs) it expected around 164,000 Romanians to spend their holidays in Austria this winter.

Officials said they expected a decline of just two per cent of Romanians travelling to Austria this winter, adding more than 212,000 people from Romania had visited Austria during the first nine months of this year.

Capital Vienna is expected to keep its top spot among Romanian holidaymakers, the Austrian Tourism’s Bucharest office said.

Around 93,000 Romanians visited the city during the last winter break, with Salzburg’s skiing hotspots Kaprun and Zell am See in second and third.

East Tyrol glacier skiing resort Sölden is the fourth-most popular destination for Romanians, with provincial Tyrolean capital Innsbruck in fifth, it has been announced.

Online newspaper Romanian Times has reported that the average Romanian tourist spends 143 Euros a day when visiting Austria, which is just six Euros less than the average figure for foreign holiday-makers.

That report came on the back of a poll expected to lighten the sceptical mood among Austrian tourism chiefs.

Online research agency marketagent.com reported earlier this week that 69 per cent of 500 Austrians participating in a poll they had carried out had said they would spend as much as they always had on winter holidays while more than one in five (21 per cent) said they planned to spend more than they usually had.

Another result of the survey, however, was that almost four in ten (38 per cent) with holiday plans for the winter planned to stay just two to three days at the location of their choice.

The Austrian Economy Chamber (WKO), meanwhile, said the situation in the tourism industry’s labour market was getting better as an increasing number of hotels and gastronomy firms were seeking new staff.

WKO job market expert Hans Schenner said that was a development caused by the fact that more and more people were booking winter holidays as snowfall had set in at several regions that have not had any snow so far this winter.

People’s Party (ÖVP) Economy Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner recently said he would be happy if the Austrian 2009/2010 holiday season ended with just "slightly negative overall turnover" considering the global economic downturn.
