Austrians to spend more in 2010

Austrians plan to spend more in 2010, according to new research.

Results of a study by insurance firm Generali released today (Weds) reveal that 18 per cent of Austrians want to spend more on holidays next year and 15 per cent want to spend more on homes, education and training.

The percentage of people planning to economise on car trips also fell, down from 21 per cent a year ago to only 10 per cent, and the percentage of those who want to cut back spending on clothing has fallen from 22 to 11 per cent.

Eighty-nine per cent want to set aside the same amount for old age as they did a year ago.

The poll also revealed that men are planning to spend more on cars and hobbies next year than women, and young people plan to spend more than older people.

But 26 per cent of young people aged 18 to 29 said they wanted to save more, compared to 13 per cent overall.

The news comes after it was revealed earlier this month that Austrians have one of the highest levels of spending power in Europe.

European Union (EU) statistical agency Eurostat reported that per capita purchasing power in Austria adjusted for price levels had been 23 per cent higher than the EU average and 14 per cent higher than the Euro-zone average in 2008.

The country’s 123 points put it behind only Luxembourg (276), Ireland (135) and the Netherlands (134) among EU member states.
