Haydn Year pumped €80mn into Burgenland's economy

Cultural events held during "Haydn Year 2009" in Burgenland gave the province’s economy an 80-million Euro boost, according to results of a new study.

Christian Helmenstein, the author of The Economic & Social Research Center’s (ESCE) study, said today (Tues) that every ninth job in Burgenland had been positively influenced in some way by the events.

Social Democratic (SPÖ) provincial culture councillor Helmut Bieler claimed the Haydn Year had directly resulted in creation of 7,500 new jobs and indirectly resulted in creation of 9,500 new jobs, more than existed in the provincial agricultural and forestry sectors combined.

Bieler added that study results would be used to prepare for Liszt Year 2011 in Burgenland, adding that study results showed that culture had a positive impact on tourism and investment in the cultural sector was justified on economic grounds alone.

Burgenland tourism chief Gerhard Gucher and Austria Marketing boss Petra Stolba said 435,000 people had attended more than 4,000 events including concerts and exhibitions as part of the events as the eastern province focused its tourism and marketing activities on  Joseph Haydn last year as it marked the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Vienna tourism director Norbert Kettner revealed the capital had also benefited from Haydn events. He said Viennese hotels registered around 10,000 bookings just from American choirs coming to Austria to perform in Haydn concerts.

Kettner added attendance at the redesigned Haydn House jumped by 800 per cent year on year as 25,000 people visited the museum located in Vienna-Mariahilf.

Lower Austrian tourism directors said the province – which borders Burgenland and encircles Vienna – was also boosted by the anniversary as around 30,000 people travelled to the small town of Rohrau to visit the composer’s birth house. While Haydn was born in Lower Austria, he spent most of his creative life in Eisenstadt.
