Vienna International Airport (VIA) reported today (Thurs) that it had had a 5.4 per cent increase in passengers year on year to 1,197,138 in February 2010.
It added that the number of passengers bound for Eastern European destinations had gone up by 5.2 per cent, the number of those headed for Western Europe had increased by 5.3 per cent and the number of those going to the Middle East had risen by 11.6 per cent last month.
VIA also said the number of take-offs and landings had climbed by 0.4 per cent and maximum take off weight by 1.4 per cent year on year in February.
A rising number of passengers will help the airport overcome recession, as may resumption of work at VIA’s new Skylink terminal. Economic analysts last month described the resumption of work at the new terminal as "positive".
UniCredit analysts warned, however, that the ongoing negotiation of some work contracts and uncertainty about who the new general contractor would be posed certain legal risks for the airport.
It was not yet possible, they said, to calculate what Skylink’s total cost would be since there would be no cost guarantees until all work contracts had been signed.
VIA had announced a day earlier that work had resumed on its new Skylink terminal and said it would be finished by the first half of 2012.
Work was stopped last June after enormous cost overruns on the project, raising the projected cost from an original 400 to 830 million Euros, were revealed.
VIA also said it was looking for a general contractor for the remainder of the work, both inside and outside Skylink and would be ready to advertise for one by the third quarter of 2010 in a manner that would be "financially advantageous for VIA."
The airport said it would be able to lower Skylink’s projected cost of 830 million Euros and at the same time remain on schedule in completing its construction.
The Audit Office (RH), meanwhile, is examining VIA’s books in an investigation of Skylink’s costs.
