Blown-up explosives factory to reopen
The Austin Powder GmbH emulsion explosives factory that blew up on 11 March 2008 is going to reopen this April, according to firm chief Wolfgang Schuster.
The explosion killed two workers whose remains were identified through DNA testing.
The explosion was also an economic blow to the small town of St. Lambrecht, Styria, which has only 1,600 residents. Fifty of the factory’s 130 employees lost their jobs, and there was fear the factory might not be rebuilt.
Firm turnover fell from 19 million Euros in 2007 to 12 million in 2008.
Schuster said the number of future employees would not exceed 130 but stressed that the factory’s future was secure. He noted it had cost six million Euros to rebuild it.
The public prosecutor’s office in Leoben, Styria, is still investigating the cause of the explosion.
